This simple question was asked and answered by Ron Coburn, Savage Range Systems inventor, in 1991. "We, like most firearm firms, were using a smash plate system in our range. In thinking how to solve the lead pollution problem, I realized it made more sense to slowly decelerate the bullet as there will be less damage to both the bullet and the range."
Mr. Coburn's idea, named the 'Snail' because of its unique, patented circular deceleration chamber, has revolutionized shooting range design and been credited with protecting shooters, employees and the environment worldwide.
